YFN in Action

For the summer 2011, we decided to put on a programme of events encouraging young fathers across the region to come together.

On 29th July we took a group of 9 young fathers Go Karting at the North Devon Karting Centre.

Everyone had two 6 minute sessions on the track and it was fair to say there was a fair amount of competitive spirit build up between the drivers while they were waiting for their turn on the track. After the briefing, everyone picked their karts, took their seats and waited for the green light.

After the first session, we were given the print out of the lap times for all of the drivers, this made most of them want to do faster lap next time round. After the second session some drivers had knocked about 5 seconds off of their original times… but we had also broken one of the Go Karts!

We then took the group to Burger King for lunch.

On Tuesday evenings during August, we ran a series of drop in groups for young fathers where we trialled many different activities from Speed Pool with a home safety edge to mug and bowl painting as well as a few ice breaker games and some cooking. Some of the activities were received better than others, however everyone got involved and tried everything. We also used this opportunity to discuss with the young fathers the possibility of running a home maintenance course as an evening programme in the future. There seemed to be some interest, and of course the opportunity for the guys to exchange stories about their own DIY adventures!
